Our feature Heart Dog today is Shadow loved by Kevin Meiners of New York. Thank you Kevin for sharing your Heart Dog Tribute!
How did you know Shadow was your Heart Dog?
My Heart Dog is Shadow. Shadow was a black lab/German Shepard mix. I got Shadow when I was very young and he lived to be almost 17 years old, he passed when I was in high school. He had congestive heart failure and we had to put him to sleep. I always knew that Shadow was my heart dog without being aware of the term (until recently). I know that I will never forget Shadow as long as I live and that I will probably never feel that same way about another dog.
Shadow loved to eat any and every kind of people food. His favourite toys were socks, which he would tear apart as fast as you could say his name. And his favourite activities were being a complete nuisance, but he was still the best dog ever!
Skills & Tricks
Some of Shadow’s special skills and tricks included: raiding the trash when nobody was home, eating any doggy toys that we got for him, and always finding something to get into; yet being extremely cute and lovable at the same time!
There are so many special (and funny) memories I have of Shadow! One of the funniest I can remember was when Shadow ate and entire box of 64 crayons while we were out one day. Shadow had a cast-iron stomach and he never even got sick!
Shadow’s best buddy (besides me) was my mom and dad’s other dog, Duke, who is also greatly missed.
How can this blog help you?
This website and blog originated from the experience of learning to let go of my beloved Heart Dog, Maverick. By sharing my story and offering the opportunity for you to share yours, I hope we can all truly celebrate their lives. pay tribute, and heal from the loss of our one true canine companion. I hope this website will also raise awareness of the meaning of a Heart Dog because it is a concept that is not largely understood.
