Wynston, a 5-year old Chihuahua from Chandler, AZ is Amanda Yantos Heart Dog. Amanda is a dog blogging extraordinaire. Please check out her awesome blog - DogMomDays.com for inspiring tips on how to live a modern and meaningful life as a dog mom.
I will never forget the rainy evening in February 2012 that Wynston and I crossed paths. Although it’s a long, complicated story, the part I remember most is how broken Wynston’s spirit was. He was frail, fearful and clinging to life. Literally.
Wyn was a mere six months old when I rescued him, and he was already emotionally and physically damaged. He weighed 3lbs and due to being emaciated and neglected, Wynston was on IV fluids at the vet for two days before I could bring him home for good.
The first several months with Wynston were extremely difficult. I was living on my own and working long days, so Wyn was not getting the deserved attention he needed from me. The fact that he came from a background of abuse made it worse. Wyn was afraid of his own shadow. He was timid. He was simply shut down from his unfortunate past.
About a year later, I said enough is enough. I couldn’t handle seeing Wynston struggle so badly with daily life. I needed to change things for him, and fast.
So I did. By May 2013, he was on stage performing tricks at the Cinco De Mayo Chihuahua Festival & Races in Chandler, AZ. Wynston finally had some confidence. His personality was starting to shine. And the best part? He won 2nd place King Chihuahua on that memorable day in May. It was the proudest moment of my life because I had taken this poor shell of a dog and turned him into a star. A star who was ready to rock this whole life thing. In December that year I started my blog, Dog Mom Days. I wanted to share my journey with Wyn because it had been such a difficult one that turned into a life-changing experience.
Fast forward to April 2014. I enrolled Wyn in agility classes at Club Doggie. Best. Decision. Ever. Wynston loves agility and we made some of our best friends there. We even met my close friend Kama, who is Wynston’s agent. Yes, his agent.
In October 2014 Wynston started modeling for PetSmart. Next month marks his two year anniversary modeling for them! It brings tears to my eyes thinking about where Wynston used to be and where he is now. He’s not even the same dog anymore. Wyn is confident, feisty and wise. His name suits him well.
Wynston is the love of my life. He’s my everything. I live and breathe for the little black and white Chihuahua who follows me around like a shadow. We are inseparable. I’m a full time pet blogger and it’s all because of Wynston. Who would have known that the fearful, abandoned Chihuahua who was once clinging to life would end up modeling for the biggest pet retailer in North America?!
This weekend is Wynston’s 5th birthday. I’m throwing him a birthday party (as I’ve done since 2013) and it’s always a highlight of my year. I put on a party for him annually just as a human mom would do for her child. After all, Wynston is my son. Why wouldn’t I celebrate him?!
Wynston is my Heart Dog and he always will be. I often thank him for hanging in there with me even when I wasn’t being the best mom I could be. But now I work at home so I can be with him all day, so I hope he forgives me ;)
I want to say a special thanks to my fiancé Matt who treated Wynston as his own right from the beginning of our relationship. Wyn will be the ring bearer in our wedding this December. I also want to thank Kama of Club Doggie and Arizona Animal Actors for giving us such amazing opportunities.
How can this blog help you?
This website and blog originated from the experience of learning to let go of my beloved Heart Dog, Maverick. By sharing my story and offering the opportunity for you to share yours, I hope we can all truly celebrate their lives. pay tribute, and heal from the loss of our one true canine companion. I hope this website will also raise awareness of the meaning of a Heart Dog because it is a concept that is not largely understood.
