The Story of Jodi & Maverick
I met Maverick in 2003. I was only 22. My sister had recently got a dog and I was enthralled. I never grew up with pets other than turtles and a rabbit. Once we did have a dog, Muffy, when I was very young. Apparently, Muffy liked to pee on me so she went to my Aunt & Uncle's house to live (true story, lol!)
In my early 20's, I was fresh out of school, living in the big city and feeling like I was ready to take on the joy and fun of canine companionship. The joyful feeling of dogs was brand new to me!
I had my heart set on a chihuhua like my sister's dog, Zoey. However, my boyfriend at the time introduced me to Shetland Sheepdogs. At first I thought their long noses looked funny and I wasn't sold. But I was willing to find a nearby breeder and meet them in person.
One Fall day, off we went to Mikasa Shelties in Brampton, Ontario and was overcome by all the furry creatures swarming around my feet. I was told a new litter was on the way and I had my heart set on a new puppy. But there was one young dog in the mix that I was instantly enamoured by. Admittedly, I don't remember details of that first meeting but I do recall thinking "one just like him!" A few days later the breeder emailed me mentioning that the dog I really loved (and seemed to love me back!) was no longer able to qualify as a show dog - his one tooth was growing in crooked and this is a big 'no-no" in the show dog world. She said a family from Vancouver emailed her wanting him but she had a feeling about me that I was the one for him.
Flattered, I agreed to come back and she graciously said we could try a weekend with him before officially deciding (talk about nice and trusting!). I went back soon after and there he was again - Maverick. He started humping my leg and I knew it was fate, lol!
Two years later, we added another Sheltie from Mikasa Shelties to our family - Marti, a female blue merle. We have all been together ever since and never apart for more than a week at a time.
